Who can manufacture a weapon using 3D blueprints with a CNC machine and a 3D printer for the different parts (metal & plastic) without any experience in gunsmithing?

I fail to understand the fascination with 3D printers as it relates to this subject of home made firearms. Firearms have been produced for centuries. The Colt “peacemaker “ revolver was introduced in 1873. Clearly, high tech equipment is not a necessity. Vice News had footage of children in the Philippines making colt 1911 model pistols from scrap steel with hand files and hammers, an incredibly laborious process, but doable. Google for the video, it’ll blow your mind. Anyone with enough determination to make a gun can and will get it done eventually.

Consumer grade 3D printers make parts from soft plastics, very nearly useless for 99% of gun parts. Yes, there are printers that can make metal parts, for a couple hundred thousand dollars, which clearly would be easier spent buying thousands of guns directly.

Perhaps my perspective is skewed on this subject because I do this sort of thing for a living, but I could make a gun over the weekend in my garage, and I don’t own my own CNC machines or a 3D printer. I have a century old manual lathe, and an 80 year old miling machine. Not typical household items, but there are hundreds of thousands of such in the world.

Rather than focusing on how guns can be created, and trying to roll back centuries of manufacturing technology, I believe we should focus on creating and maintaining civil societies where people feel no need to shoot one another. It’s a big job, the only sustainable way to avoid bloodshed.
