How good are extruder 3D printed gears from a cheapish printer?

You'll notice that these gears are all used in one particular place: the extruder.

This is a place where the gearing doesn't have to be low friction or smooth -- if it is, you have other problems. Firstly, remember the other side of the big gear is a hobbed bolt like this one:

So in the above, despite the big gear, it's actually a reduction gear from the first gear. And it's connected to a stepper motor with 200+ steps, so it's plenty accurate enough for the purpose of pushing plastic into a melting area. It doesn't experience particularly high forces.

I would be extremely worried if someone used these types of gears for positioning the 3D print head.

In addition, herringbone gears have many useful properties -- in particular, they are self-centering and you don't need to make sure the gear is held in place. The pain with them is that they can't be easily manufactured with conventional equipment (like a gear hobbing machine). But they can easily be 3D printed.

So using 3D printed gears like this for the extruder is just a case of practical engineering. They do the job just fine.
