How do we calculate the torque needed (N.m) of a 17 stepper motor

How do we calculate the torque needed (N.m) of a stepper motor that is put horizontally and connected to a 1 m vertical rod which has 7 kg at its end? If the distance is 0.5 m does required load by the stepper motor gets multiplied or divided by 2?
To turn a 7kg weight on the end of a 1m arm you need at least a 70Nm motor.

A kilogram is roughly 10N and torque is force times distance. Therefore, the motor torque required is 7kg x 10N x 1m, which is 70Nm.

If you change the length to 0.5m then you need 35Nm, so the required torque is halved.
