How do I make a 5-axis CNC milling machine using stepper motors and Arduino microcontrollers?

Mechanical: You should start with a “donor” machine. A non CNC milling machine. Milling machines need to be strong, stiff, and accurate. For those reasons they are usually iron castings with precision ways. If you are doing this as a learning experience you can use something lightweight like 80–20, but you will end up with poor accuracy, and finish. Also - Start with 3 axis and get it to work, then add your 4th and 5th.

Controls: You need to decide what it is you want to accomplish. If you just want a working CNC machine, the fastest path to that goal would be to use available software like Mach4 or LinuxCNC that will run on a cheap PC.
