How do I deal with an unknown stepper motor?
The number of leads and the continuity between the coils and the value of resistance of the coils will give a clear picture what type of motor it is. Then if one follows the binary logic of the possible states the leads out of the motor can be supplied with, the excitation for a particular rotation can be deduced. Start with a low voltage just enough to move the shaft and then apply a suitable voltage where the temperature of the motor will decide the voltage selection. A bipolar motor is normally better than a unipolar motor due to the reversal of the currents in the coils. A few mechanical single throw or change over switches mounted on a piece of wood does make the “ research” much easier.
