How do I control a stepper motor nema 34 with Arduino + CNC Shield + A4988?

first check out the documentation that came with the CNC shield so you know which pins are responsible for what functions.
Next it is important to set the current limit on the A4988.
On the firmware side of the arduino, you can use existing stepper motor libraries to send the correct pulses to the A4988, , you just have to instantiate them with the correct pin designations.

Another method is to flash the arduino with the brilliant GRBL firmware. which can translate GCode sent to it and in turn drive the correct motors

But if you want to do it manually, set the pin state for the direction pin ether high or low, (for direction of the motor) , and then pulse the step pin , depending on how you have configured the micro-stepping on the driver the motor will begin moving in steps.
